Efforts at Bell Labs and many other academic and industrial laboratories in the U.S. and overseas starting with the work of Maurer and others at Corning, Inc., led to the development of techniques to produce very long lengths of silica lightguide fibers with 700 MPa proof test lengths of greater than 10 kms. The perfection of the 2-point bend technique for the simple testing of fibers of ~ 100 to 300 microns led to an understanding of many of the strength, aging and fatigue properties of these silica fibers. Since that time, workers at the Missouri University of Science and Technology have expanded this work in many ways. The PhD work of N.P. Lower has been published as a number of separate papers. His full thesis can be found here.Nathan Lower Dissertation Final.pdf
